Canva resume builder: is a Canva resume ATS-friendly?
A Canva resume can work, but it depends on the template. Many design-led layouts use columns, text boxes and icons that can scramble the order an applicant tracking system reads your text in. Here is what breaks, how to make a Canva resume that parses, and when to send a plain version instead.

Is a Canva resume ATS-friendly? The short answer
It depends on the template, not on Canva itself. Canva is a design tool with a large library of resume templates, from plain single-column pages to poster-style layouts, and it exports a PDF. That PDF usually contains real, selectable text, so a Canva resume is not unreadable by default. Anyone who says applicant tracking systems can’t read Canva files is overstating it.
The risk is in the layout. Design-led Canva resume templates lean on two columns, separate text boxes, icons in place of labels, skill bars, color blocks and decorative fonts. An ATS extracts the text from your file and sorts it into fields such as name, employer, title, dates and skills. When the layout is complicated, that text can come out in the wrong order, or part of it can go missing. Results vary by template and by system, so nobody can promise how your file will be read.
Keep the stakes in proportion. A messy parse rarely means automatic rejection. More often it leaves your profile incomplete or out of order, which makes you harder to find when a recruiter searches. (The claim that 75 percent of resumes are rejected by an ATS has no credible source.) A Canva resume that looks like an ordinary document is usually fine. One that looks like a poster is the one to test or replace.
How to tell if a Canva resume template is risky
Check the template before you spend an hour filling it in. Open it and look for these signs.
- One column or two? A single column reading top to bottom is safest. A narrow sidebar for contact details and skills is the most common problem.
- Icons or ratings? Icons beside your phone and email, or bars and dots beside your skills, are decoration a parser can’t use.
- Is every line its own text box? Click around the page. If each date, title and bullet floats separately, the reading order is harder to predict.
- Photo, timeline or graphic frames? They add nothing a parser can read, and they often squeeze text into narrow shapes.
- Standard headings? Experience, Education and Skills are easy to sort. Creative labels such as “My Story” are not.
- Could you build it in Word? If so, it is probably safe. If it needs text layered over shapes, treat it as a design piece.
What goes wrong when an ATS reads a Canva resume
An ATS does not look at your page. It pulls the text out of the file in the order the file stores it, then sorts that text into fields. In a word-processor document that order matches how you read. In a design tool, every text box is its own object, and the order those objects are stored in need not match the order your eye follows. A parser can read straight across a two-column page, so a skills sidebar lands in the middle of a job. Some systems also skip areas that look like headers, footers or graphics.
Some parsers handle columns and boxes better than others, and you won’t know which one an employer uses. So remove the risk rather than gamble on the system. The table lists the elements Canva resume templates use most, with a safer choice for each.
Canva elements that cause trouble, and what to use instead
None of these fails in every system. All of them fail often enough to avoid on a resume you submit through an online form.
| Canva element | What can go wrong | Safer choice |
|---|---|---|
| Two columns or a sidebar | Text can be read straight across both columns, so sidebar skills or contact lines land in the middle of your job history. Sections can come out scrambled or dropped. | One column, top to bottom: contact line, summary, experience, education, skills. |
| Many separate text boxes | Each box can be read as its own block, in an order that may not match the page. Dates and titles can drift away from their bullets. | Keep each job’s title, company, dates and bullets together, in as few text elements as the design allows. |
| Icons in place of labels | A phone or envelope icon can extract as nothing, or as a stray character. If the icon is the only label, the number can arrive unlabeled. | Write the email, phone, city and LinkedIn URL out as plain text. |
| Skill bars, dots, stars and rings | They are shapes, not words. A bar filled to 80 percent carries no keyword and may not appear in the extracted text. | List skills as words, grouped by type, such as “Tools: Excel, SQL, Tableau”. |
| Tables and grids | Cells can be read row by row or column by column, depending on the system, which can split dates from their jobs. | Plain lines: title, company and dates on one line, then bullets. |
| Contact details in a banner, sidebar or page edge | Parsers differ on areas that look like headers and footers. Details there can be read late, out of place or not at all. | Name, phone, email and location as ordinary text at the top of the page body. |
| Decorative or script fonts, and ligatures | Unusual fonts can store letters in ways that don’t map back to normal characters, which in some PDFs shows up as odd symbols or missing letters. | Common, plain fonts at about 10 to 12 pt. Check the pasted text for odd characters. |
| Text as an image | A screenshot, a PNG or JPG download, or text turned into a graphic holds no text. There is nothing to extract. | Real text, exported as a PDF. If you can’t select a line with your cursor, a parser can’t read it. |
| Photos, color blocks and background graphics | They add nothing a parser can use. Text over a photo or dark color can also be hard to read, especially printed in black and white. | A white or very light background with dark text. Skip the photo where employers generally avoid them, as in the US and UK. |
How to make an ATS-friendly resume in Canva, step by step
Whether you use the Canva resume builder or treat Canva as a general resume maker, use it like a word processor, not a poster tool.
- 1Start from the plainest template you can find
Browse Canva’s resume templates and pick one with a single column, no photo frame, no sidebar and no timeline graphics. Love a two-column design? Move the sidebar content into the main column and delete the sidebar.
- 2Write your contact details as words
At the top, type your name, city, phone, email and LinkedIn URL as plain text. Delete the icons. Write the URL out in full instead of hiding it behind a word like “portfolio”.
- 3Use standard section headings
Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills and Certifications are the labels parsers and recruiters expect. Save creative headings for your portfolio.
- 4Replace graphics with words
Delete skill bars, rating dots and percentage rings, and list skills as plain text. Remove the photo, timeline lines and any decorative shape that carries information. Keep a white or very light background.
- 5Keep the text simple and in order
Use one common font, or two, at about 10 to 12 pt, with plain round bullets. Arrange the page so it reads top to bottom, and keep each job’s title, company, dates and bullets together. Don’t use spaces or tabs to fake columns.
- 6Export as a PDF
Use Canva’s Download option, choose PDF, and pick Standard if Canva offers both Standard and Print. Avoid PNG and JPG: they are pictures with no text. Name the file FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf.
- 7Test the exported file, not the design
The editor can look perfect while the PDF reads badly. Run the checks below on the downloaded file before you send it.
How to test a Canva resume for ATS
Three minutes, and no special software.
- 1Run the copy-and-paste test
Open the downloaded PDF, select everything (Ctrl+A, or Cmd+A on a Mac), copy it and paste it into a plain-text editor such as Notepad. If you can’t select any text, the PDF is an image and a parser has nothing to read.
- 2Read the pasted text like a parser would
Your name and contact details should come first. Each job should keep its title, company, dates and bullets together, newest first, with skills as words. Red flags: sidebar text in the middle of a job, all the dates in one block, a missing phone number or email, and odd symbols where an icon or special font was.
- 3Run the free ATS checker against a real job post
Upload the PDF to JobTailor’s free ATS checker and paste a job link or description. It scores the text it extracts from your file against the posting, so anything missing from that text is likely invisible to a parser too, and shows up as missing in the breakdown. It does not run a separate layout check, so use it alongside the copy-and-paste test, not instead of it.
- 4Watch the application form
Many employer forms, Workday among them, pre-fill fields such as name, employers and dates from the resume you upload. If those arrive wrong, the parse went wrong. Fix the file, or upload your plain version, and try again.
No template can promise it
When a Canva resume maker is the right tool
A designed resume isn’t wrong. It is the wrong tool for some destinations and the right one for others.
In graphic design, branding, marketing and similar fields, a resume that shows your eye can help, and a person often sees the file. Keep the text real and the order clean, and write your portfolio link out as plain text.
At a career fair, a coffee chat or an informational interview, a person holds your resume. Print it, or attach the designed PDF to an email to a contact, where a human reads it first.
A designed one-pager works as a cover sheet for a portfolio or a personal site. It is a showcase, not necessarily the file you upload to an application form.
When you upload through Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS or a careers page, software parses the file before a person sees it. A plain single-column version earns its keep here, especially at large employers and for high-volume roles.
Keep two versions of your resume
The simplest answer to Canva or plain is both. Keep a plain, single-column version for online applications and a designed Canva version for people: networking, direct emails, print and portfolios. The facts are identical in both. Only the layout differs.
Build the plain one first, then move its content into a Canva design. That is faster than stripping a heavily designed file back down. Name the files so you never attach the wrong one, such as FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf for the plain file and FirstName-LastName-Resume-Design.pdf for the designed one. When a title or date changes, update both.
If you apply by email to a named person, the designed version is a fine choice. If the posting links to a form or portal, send the plain one. If you can’t tell, send the plain one: a person reads it easily, and software can’t always read a designed page.
Alternatives to a Canva resume builder
If you only need a resume that parses, or you want the layout handled for you, these free options are built for it.
- JobTailor’s free resume builder: a single-column layout with standard headings and real text. Fill in your details, watch the live preview, and it emails you the PDF and a Word (.docx) file. No sign-up and no watermark.
- The free ATS-friendly Word template: a plain single-column .docx you can edit in Word or open in Google Docs, with the format rules behind it.
- Google Docs or Microsoft Word: a blank document gives you real text in reading order by default. Export a PDF when you need one, and skip templates that rely on text boxes or tables.
- Canva, used plainly: a single-column template with no icons, bars or photo works as a word processor with nicer fonts, as described above.
Whichever tool you use, tailor it to the job
A readable file gets your content into the system. What it says decides what happens next. Recruiters search the posting’s terms, so a clean resume still needs the right title, tools and keywords for each role. Our ATS keywords guide shows how to pick the few worth matching.
JobTailor reads the text out of your PDF or Word file, scores it against the job and rewrites toward the posting as tracked changes you accept or reject. It never invents employers, titles, dates, degrees, tools or metrics. If your Canva PDF copies out jumbled, JobTailor may extract the same jumbled text, so fix the layout first.
Frequently asked
Is Canva good for resumes?
Canva is good at design. It has many resume templates, it is easy to edit, and it gets you a polished page quickly. That same freedom is what causes parsing trouble, because columns, icons and text boxes are easy to add. Used plainly, with a single column and real text, it works fine as a Canva resume maker. For applications that go through an online form, a plain version is the safer file.
Do employers accept Canva resumes?
Yes. What the employer receives is a PDF, and nothing in the file says it came from Canva. What matters is how the PDF reads. If a person opens it, a clean design is fine. If an ATS parses it, a complicated layout can scramble your details. Follow the posting’s instructions, and check whether it names a file type.
Can an ATS read a PDF exported from Canva?
Usually the PDF contains real, selectable text, so there is something to read. What varies is the order and completeness: columns, text boxes, icons and graphics can change how the text comes out. PNG and JPG downloads are images with no text and shouldn’t be used for applications. Test your own file by copying its text into a plain-text editor.
Can I make a Canva resume ATS-friendly?
In most cases, yes. Choose a single-column template, replace icons and skill bars with words, use standard headings, export a PDF and check that the text copies out in the right order. Nobody can guarantee how every system will read it, so if the copied text is still jumbled, rebuild the resume in a plain tool.
Should I send a Canva resume as a PDF or a Word file?
Send a PDF unless the posting asks for something else, because it keeps your layout on every device. If an upload box accepts only Word, build the plain version in Word, Google Docs or JobTailor’s free builder rather than converting a designed PDF. Converted layouts often break into text boxes and stray line breaks.
Is Canva’s resume builder free?
Canva offers free resume templates, and some templates and design elements are part of its paid Pro plan. What is free and what costs money can change, so check Canva’s site for current details. You don’t need paid elements for an ATS-friendly resume, since the plainest layouts use nothing but text. JobTailor’s free resume builder is another no-cost option, with no sign-up.
Can I upload my Canva resume to JobTailor?
Yes, as a PDF with selectable text. JobTailor reads the text from your file, scores it against the job and proposes changes as tracked changes you accept or reject. If your Canva PDF copies out jumbled, the extracted text can be jumbled too, so fix the layout first or start from a plain version.
Check your Canva resume against a real job post
Upload the PDF, paste a job link, and see the match score and the keywords you’re missing. If the text comes out jumbled, build a clean single-column version free in minutes.
