The myth: more keywords equals a higher score

- 1Find the hard requirements first
Look for the 'Requirements' or 'Must-have' section. Anything with a number attached (5+ years, Bachelor's in X, CPA required) or paired with 'required' is a filter. These are non-negotiable. If your resume doesn't contain the exact phrasing, you're getting cut before a human sees it.
- 2Identify the top 3 skills repeated across the whole posting
Skills that appear in the title, the summary, and the responsibilities are the ones the hiring manager actually cares about. If 'SQL' shows up four times but 'Excel' shows up once, SQL is the keyword that matters. Excel is background noise.
- 3Match the exact phrasing, not synonyms
If the JD says 'customer success,' don't write 'client relationship management.' Most parsers are literal. 'JavaScript' and 'JS' are different tokens. 'Project management' and 'PM' are different tokens. Copy the surface form.
- 4Place them where recruiters look
The top third of page one — headline, summary, and the first two bullets of your most recent role. A keyword buried on page two in a role from 2019 counts less than the same keyword in your current title line.
- 5Cut the rest
If a keyword didn't survive steps 1-4, leave it out. A tight resume with 5-8 real matches beats a bloated one with 20 vague ones every time.
Signal keywords vs. noise keywords
A quick mental model. Signal keywords change outcomes. Noise keywords fill space.
Specific tools, languages, certifications, methodologies. 'Kubernetes.' 'Series 7.' 'Six Sigma.' These get parsed cleanly and matter to both the ATS and the human.
'Reduced churn 18%.' 'Led migration of 4 services.' The keyword is 'churn' or 'migration' — the number is what makes the recruiter stop scrolling.
If you're targeting 'Senior Product Manager,' having that phrase in your summary or a recent role title dramatically improves both parsing and recruiter recall.
'Collaborative.' 'Detail-oriented.' 'Passionate.' No ATS is filtering on these, and every candidate claims them. They eat space that should go to something real.
'Leveraged.' 'Utilized.' 'Spearheaded.' They don't map to a skill or a filter. Swap them for the actual thing you did.
'Synergy.' 'Ecosystem.' 'Digital transformation' (unless the JD uses it verbatim). If the phrase doesn't appear in the posting, it's not helping you match it.

Placement matters as much as the keyword itself. Same word, different location, different result.

- First bullet of your current or most recent role — recruiters read this bullet more than any other on the page.
- A dedicated 'Skills' or 'Core Competencies' section — clean list format, no prose, easy for the ATS to parse.
- Job titles themselves — if your official title was vague, add a clarifying parenthetical (e.g. 'Analyst (Data Engineering)').
- Avoid: headers, footers, text inside images, or tables with merged cells — many parsers still choke on these.
