How to tailor an accountant resume to a job description
Finance postings are precise about qualifications, systems and the close process. Here's how to mirror them accurately so the screen finds your credentials and the hiring manager sees the right experience.
What finance hiring managers look for
Accounting roles are screened for qualifications and systems first: CPA, ACA, ACCA or CIMA status, the ERP or accounting software you've used, and the standards you've worked under, such as US GAAP or IFRS.
Then finance leaders read for scope and accuracy: which ledgers and entities you owned, how the close ran, and the controls or improvements you delivered.
Keywords that usually matter
Pull these from the posting itself, and only use the ones you can back up with real experience.
- Qualifications: CPA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA — or part-qualified with your stage.
- Standards: US GAAP, IFRS, FRS 102, SOX controls.
- Systems: NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Xero, QuickBooks, Excel (pivot tables, lookups).
- Processes: month-end close, reconciliations, accruals, journals, consolidations.
- Reporting: management accounts, variance analysis, forecasts, budgets.
- Compliance: audit support, VAT or sales-tax returns, internal controls.
- Scope: multi-entity, multi-currency, and the volumes you handled.
Where each keyword belongs
Qualification, years and focus — for example, "ACCA-qualified accountant with four years in multi-entity month-end".
Your professional qualification and status near the top; screens filter on it.
What you owned, the systems you used, and the improvement or accuracy you delivered.
ERP and spreadsheet skills by name — "NetSuite" and "Excel" exactly as the posting writes them.
Before and after: one bullet (example)
Before: "Responsible for month-end tasks." After, for a posting about month-end close and reconciliations in NetSuite: "Owned month-end close for three entities in NetSuite, including bank and intercompany reconciliations, and shortened the close by three days." Only state timings and volumes you can stand behind in an interview.

Frequently asked questions
Should I include part-qualified status?
Yes. State the qualification and your stage — for example, "ACCA, 9 of 13 exams passed" — so screens and recruiters see your progress.
Do I need to list every software package?
List the ones the posting names that you've used, plus your main ERP. Excel skills are worth naming specifically.
Will tailoring change my numbers?
No. JobTailor never invents figures — it rephrases and reorders what's already in your resume, and you approve every change.
